About the Philadelphia Energy Authority

The Philadelphia Energy Authority is an independent municipal authority focused on issues of energy affordability and sustainability for Philadelphia. In early 2016, in partnership with City Council President Darrell Clarke, PEA launched the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects in 4 sectors: city buildings, public schools, low- and moderate-income housing, and small businesses. We believe that energy is an important vehicle for reducing poverty, improving education, strengthening communities and leveraging public investment.

Job Description

Interns are an integral part of the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA). You are critical to expanding our outreach and impact. We offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to the early development of the energy campaign and will provide a balance of valuable civic engagement and entrepreneurial business experience. PEA is uniquely positioned to facilitate discussions regarding innovative energy projects, educate policy development, and lead the implementation of best practices.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to assist with the operations of programs within the Energy Campaign. The main focus of the internship will be the Solarize Philly program, the Small Business program and/or implementation of new programs.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Helping  with the intake process of program participants (including calling participants for outreach and to welcome them to the program)
  • Organizing and attending info sessions and other public outreach events
  • Researching special topics and writing white paper related to the Philadelphia Energy Campaign
  • Working on energy efficiency grant applications
  • Developing and implementing screening process for multi-family building program
  • Analyzing energy performance data and retrofit outcomes for businesses and residential properties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Have a demonstrated interest in energy, sustainability, climate change, advocacy, education, urban studies and/or other relevant topics.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Display maturity and a high level of professionalism
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Must be collaborative and enjoy working with others

Additional Information

The intern will be expected to work for 30-40 hours a week at our office located in Philadelphia City Hall. This is a paid summer internship; compensation will be $11/hr for undergraduates and $15/hr for graduate students.
