SDHP Mission and Background:

SDHP Mission and Background: The Self Determination of Housing Project of Pennsylvania (SDHP) is an organization created to promote self-determination and control in housing for persons with disabilities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. To that end, SDHP will focus on bridging the housing and disability communities through the provision of education, information, training and technical assistance to persons, groups and organizations, including but not limited to individuals with disabilities, families, advocates, public agencies, government officials service providers, lenders, builders, developers, architects, Realtors and legal representatives. SDHP will encourage and help to foster state and local partnerships and coalitions among these interests to enable persons with disabilities to realize the housing of choice and preference.

Position Description:

The Executive Director leads the organization and is the primary spokesperson, fundraiser and administrator. The ED is responsible for ensuring that the organization advances its mission and is financially sound. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Extensive experience in nonprofit management with a minimum of six years experience, especially in the areas of disability, community/housing development and/or homelessness
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership, organizational and administrative ability, including leading, supervising and directing staff, as well as working collaboratively on budgeting, staff development, fundraising, board development and public relations
  • Commitment to the mission of the organization; community organizing and/or public advocacy, demonstrated ability to build and maintain coalitions, including working with diverse constituencies in an inclusive way
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Proven ability to fundraise, including grant writing
  • Working knowledge and skill in word processing and spread sheets


  • Promotes the agency’s vision and mission through presentations, social media outreach and
    print materials
  • Oversees the design, delivery and quality of the programs and services
  • Identifies trends and root causes of organizational challenges, provides recommendation for improvements, documentation and training
  • Develops and builds revenue streams to sustain the organization
  • Oversees the operations of the organization and manages its compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Creates and maintains procedures for implementing plans approved by the board of directors
  • Promotes a culture that reflects the organization’s values, encourages good performance and rewards productivity
  • Hires and manages staff
  • Ensures that staff and the board have sufficient and up-to-date information
  • Leads and empowers all staff
  • Builds and strengthens the agency’s reputation
  • Advocates for state plans and policies that promote housing options for people with disabilities and older adults
  • Engages local, state and national partners to advocate for policy change and funding
  • Supports operations and administration of the board of directors by advising and informing board members and interfacing between board and staff
  • Assists in the selection and evaluation of board members and board leadership
  • Makes recommendations to support the board during orientation and self-evaluation
  • Develops the annual budget that supports operating plans and submits the budget for board approval
  • Prudently manages the organization’s resources within budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations
  • Ensures that all appropriate accounting procedures are followed in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Provides prompt, thorough and accurate information to keep the board appropriately informed of the organization’s financial position
  • Participates with the board of directors in an annual strategic plan review and assists in 3, 5, and 10 year plan
  • Statewide travel is required and may include overnight stays
