Job Description

The primary responsibilities for this position are to contribute to the Emerging Technologies business line.  CES’s Emerging Technologies team includes technology, market, and policy experts with a deep understanding of energy storage technologies. Our team understands and translates the complex rules and business practices of the North American RTO/ISO markets and utilities as they apply to energy storage resources.

CES’s Emerging Tech consulting services include a wide range of products, including financial analysis, strategic consulting, and technology due diligence, to help our clients understand the evolving market rules and the value proposition of new technologies. CES’s practical experience with the day-to-day operations of over 120 MWs of energy storage facilities in competitive markets provides our team with real-life experience that sets our consulting services apart from other providers.

Responsibilities

The candidate will contribute to the core consulting services of the Emerging Technologies division of CES, including the development of the StorageIQ market intelligence product. Qualified candidates for this position will be able to work independently and collaboratively and will possess strong communication and analytical skills.  Ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of wholesale market rules – especially in PJM, ERCOT, SPP, and MISO. .Periodic travel to attend regulatory meetings and conferences.

  • Emerging Tech Consulting services
    • The candidate will initiate, assist, and/or lead the completion of deliverables for various Emerging Technology projects with a focus on energy storage, demand response, and electric vehicles. Key contribution will be in knowledge of market design, rules, and implementation.
    • The candidate will be able to utilize and improve CES’s suite of dispatch and financial models that are used for valuing energy storage projects.
  • StorageIQ service
    • Monitor and participate in multiple ISO/RTO, utility, and state government stakeholder meetings and quickly write succinct reports, with analysis where appropriate, on Emerging Technology developments from those meetings for internal and external clients.
    • Recommend appropriate courses of action according to clients’ commercial interests.
    • Work closely with clients and stay familiar with their interests by addressing clients’ questions in a timely manner and participating in regular conference calls.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years energy industry experience required
  • Relevant college degree or equivalent experience required
  • Relevant graduate degree or advanced industry training preferred
  • Knowledge of energy storage concepts including: grid level storage, behind the meter storage, energy storage and battery technology, renewables pairing, and energy storage dispatch modeling preferred
  • Knowledge of RTO/ISO energy, operating reserves, capacity markets (preferably in ERCOT, MISO, and SPP) required
  • Knowledge of RTO/ISO transmission planning and generation interconnection processes preferred
  • Strong writing skills required
  • Strong analytical/quantitative skills and experience required
  • Experience writing under tight deadlines preferred
  • Strong verbal and public presentation skills preferred
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively required
  • Business development orientation preferred
